This course introduces students to geoprocessing using the ModelBuilder within ArcGIS desktop. Students learn the basics of creating a model as well as how to insert parameters, loops and lists of inputs. In addition, students will also learn how to document their work and provide helpful information to the users of their models. Students will also be made aware of more advanced tools and procedures and will embed models within other models.

The course will provide you with the knowledge to:

  • Geoprocessing overview: Environments and options, run geoprocessing tools, create a toolbox and add tools.
  • Basic model building: Types of models, model elements, accessing and creating models, adding model elements, supported data types, intermediate data, model navigation, running a model and validating models.
  • Properties and documentation: Model properties, diagram properties, model labels, model documentation, model reports, exporting models.
  • Improving your models: Use loops in your models, use lists to provide input, use iterations, loop terminator variables, feedback looping, n-memory workspace, run precondition checks.
  • Advanced processes: Model only tools, embed models as tools, create a more complex analysis model.
  • Project work (optional): Wind farm project, sport and recreation project.

Ideally, the delegate would have attended ArcGIS 1 – Fundamentals of ArcGIS 10.x and ArcGIS 2 – Essentials of ArcGIS 10.x or have equivalent working knowledge and experience. Prior basic knowledge of a geodatabase is also assumed.
